Should you use soft water in your hot tub?  While water that's been through a water softener is great for cooking and drinking, it is not the best thing for your hot tub.  Why?  Well, too little calcium in your water can cause your metal fittings to start to corrode. As a rule, soft water has very little calcium in it, which means you'd have to add a calcium booster to your water.

Should I shower before I go in a hot tub? Absolutely. A quick rinse in the shower helps to remove lotions, soaps, detergents, and other substances that when they start interacting with the water. If you and your guests don't shower before you go in a hot tub, it is what causes hot tub water to foam up.

Hot Tub Use and Shocking your Spa

Water and Chemicals in a Hot Tub

Many questions first time hot tub owners have are about getting a hot tub involve water and chemicals.  You must realize one thing up front, a pool and a hot tub differ from each other. Should water in a hot tub be treated with chemicals exactly like a swimming pool? No. While alkaline levels and pH are identical, bromine, chlorine or other sanitizer levels are a lot lower at 3-5 ppm. Also with a tub, you have to clean the filter far more than you would with with a pool as well as balance the pH and sanitizer.

Is it possible to buy a product to keep your hot pH levels static? As your hot tub dealer in Glendale we do not recommend them, no. Why? Well, products like these are designed for water with less than 150ppm calcium hardness. Most likely you will end up clouding your water. While the filter can clean your water up, you'll have to clean your filter too. What do I do if my pH number is very low and my alkaline is higher than normal? You always start with the lowest number first. So increase your pH level first, then lower it, which will bring your alkaline and pH levels back in balance.

One other commonality that hot tubs share with pools is that you'll have to clean them every now and then.
