What is Insomnia and What Causes It?

Sooner or later, we all get it: insomnia.  It is one of the most frustrating conditions to have.  Part of it is knowing that the rest of the world is asleep when you're wide awake and staring at the ceiling.  But what is insomnia and what causes it? According to the MAYO CLINIC WEBSITE: "nsomnia is a persistent disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep or both, despite the opportunity for adequate sleep. With insomnia, you usually awaken feeling unrefreshed, which takes a toll on your ability to function during the day. Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life. How much sleep is enough varies from person to person. Most adults need seven to eight hours a night. Many adults experience insomnia at some point, but some people have long-term (chronic) insomnia. Insomnia may be the primary problem, or it may be secondary due to other causes, such as a disease or medication.
Insomnia symptoms may include:
Difficulty falling asleep at night
Awakening during the night
Awakening too early
Not feeling well rested after a night's sleep
Daytime tiredness or sleepiness
Irritability, depression or anxiety
Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering"

As adults, we need between 7-8 hours of sleep a night.  One of the best things you can do before bedtime is take active steps to relax.  One method is to spend some time in a hot tub and have at least 20 minutes of hot tub massage therapy.

How Can a Hot Tub Help With Insomnia?

How can a hot tub help with insomnia?  For one thing, massage therapy relieves stress.  However, there is more to it.  In our last article we covered the positive effects of heat and buoyancy, but there may be something deeper.  For example, if you sit in a hot tub and you're either listening to peaceful music or sitting silently, you go into an almost meditative state.  The part of us that is the hardest to relax, after all, isn't our bodies, it is our minds.

In a hot tub, however, as you relax, so does your mind.  As your mind relax, your body also relaxes further.  So that by the time you get into bed, you're deeply relaxed.  So there is more to hot tub massage therapy than you might think.
